South Jersey State of Mind
I currently live and work in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, but have lived and worked in and around Southern New Jersey my whole life (except for a brief posting – 8.5 years in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia).
I was born in Camden, New Jersey at Cooper Hospital and was the youngest of 5 children – we lived at 1022 North 3rd Street. My older siblings raved about what a wonderful place Camden was to grow up in in the 50′s but we moved in the early 60′s (when I was just a toddler) so I don’t recall too much. We moved to Cinnaminson, New Jersey where I spent my formative years. My father was the custodian of St. Charles Borremeo church – so my family was very entangled with the operations of the church and the school. I was my father’s assistant and cleaned many a classroom and used to help maintain all the grounds for the church, the rectory and the convent.
My family also operated a roadside farm for many years on Branch Pike next to the church – this was quite an operation that generated enough profits for my parents to finance the college educations of my siblings and I during 17 straight years when my parents had at least one child in college.
I was lucky enough to attend a very good high school, Cinnaminson High, where I received an excellent education and was active in sports. I played football and wrestled. I was the varsity heavyweight during my junior and senior years and did well enough to advance to the state tournament in my senior year.
I attended college at West Liberty State College in West Liberty, West Virginia. Now known as West Liberty University, this institution represented a fantastic education bargain. My training stood up very well, I think, to my counterparts early in my career who often attended some of Philadelphia’s finest institutions.
Then it was back to Cinnaminson while I started my career at an accounting firm in Philadelphia named Laventhol & Horwath.
Now, after my overseas posting ended, I’m back home living in Cherry Hill and working with my clients in and around South Jersey. This area is a diverse, vibrant economy and has some incredibly strong sectors. I’m fortunate enough to have several clients that are established profitable entities. A recent additional to my stable is recovering from a poor year in 2009 but is doing incredibly well this year. I’m also working with a couple of early stage companies and am supporting them while they are seeking funding.
My work is highly rewarding as I can use my accumulated expertise to help contribute to the success of my clients.
